Work on the Diamond Creek Trail extension has entered its final stage, thanks to funding from the Andrews Labor Government.

This trail extension will link up with the Main Yarra Trail to form a continuous 55 kilometre trail from Melbourne’s CBD to Hurstbridge – allowing cyclists better connections and supporting cyclists to commute into the city.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio visited on Saturday the works at the Diamond Creek Trail. The $5 million extension linking Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge will offer more space for walkers, runners, cyclists, and horse riders, and better connections for commuters and public transport users.

The trail incorporates a paved path for runners, cyclists and walkers, and a natural trail for horse riding. Stage 2 will build 3.2km of trail between Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge, including six new bridges.

The project is part of the $10 million Northern Metropolitan Trails Program, designed to deliver new cycling and walking trails in Melbourne’s north, and encourage more people to use trails to get around, to enjoy themselves and to connect with nature.

The trail extension has been funded through the Labor Government’s $154 million Suburban Parks Program, which will create 6,500 hectares of public open space including parkland and trails.

Nillumbik Shire Council has led design and delivery of the project, working with community interest groups and an advisory committee to ensure the new section of trail best meets the needs of the community and integrates with other open space and infrastructure, such as railway stations.

Stage 1 works to build the trail between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen are on track to be complete later this month, with the trail expected to be open to the public by October 2021.
