Perry Impressive: Push On For Huge World Cup Crowd At MCG

Victoria’s support for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is building, just over one month out from an anticipated blockbuster crowd turning out for the final at the MCG.

Images of two stars of the show – Australian cricket gun Ellyse Perry and namesake, American singing sensation Katy Perry – along with the MCG were today unveiled in a new mural in Melbourne’s street art mecca, Hosier Lane.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula joined ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year Ellyse Perry in Hosier Lane to see the work created by local artist Tayla Broekman.

Cricket allrounder Perry is an integral member of the reigning T20 World Cup champion team as well as being an adopted Melburnian, having moved from Sydney and turning out for Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League this season.

Entertainment allrounder Perry will provide the pre-final fireworks with a performance on the famous MCG arena before returning for a post-match concert.

Australia is the top-ranked of 10 countries that will do battle across Australia over 17 days from 21 February, and the Hosier Lane pitch is part of a drive to fill the MCG for the final – a twilight match to be played on International Women’s Day, 8 March.

A crowd of more than 90,185 would break the world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event set at
soccer’s 1999 World Cup final between the US and China in California.

The MCG is the place for big turnouts, holding the world record for the biggest cricket crowd – 93,013 for the 2015 ICC Men’s World Cup final played between Australia and New Zealand.

A free fan zone at Yarra Park on the weekend of the T20 World Cup final will celebrate the best of Melbourne and Victoria through cricket, art, food, music and family-friendly entertainment.

Junction Oval will host five World Cup pool matches, including Australia v New Zealand on Monday, 2 March.

Tickets for the 8 March final at the MCG cost $20 for adults and $5 for children and can be purchased at tickets.t20worldcup.com.
